The following is an excerpt from the book, Unfinished Designs: A History of Forgotten Military Vehicles, Weapons, and Gear, by Arlan Finek. [Originally published two years ago.]

A booming collector’s market has emerged in recent years for prototype military vehicles and equipment. As with most prototypes, very few exist, and the vast majority were never intended to be made available to the public—instead they are often mothballed in warehouses or destroyed.

Due to these factors, many prototypes are highly sought after and those that are found—usually by less-than-legal means—are usually auctioned in black market circles on the Net.
